When heading out on shooting sessions I try to achieve success on two of my finishing styles. I concentrate on tonal range for the calm long exposure scenes and for compositions like this I look for the texture, contrast and timing.
I was really drawn to the uneven texture of the ground as well as the jigsaw puzzle like edging to the breakwater. I stood here for quite some time watching the swells in the water and timing the exposure just slightly beforehand to ensure that the mirror was open during the water crash.
Some of my shots were quite pitiful and weak and almost gave up when I saw a nice swell moving in. I dragged the exposure to the exact timing of where I wanted emphasis of my composition and here you have ‘Crash’.
